A pet is like a family member for many of us, and the idea of having to leave them behind when traveling can be heartbreaking. Luckily for camping enthusiasts, there are a number of campgrounds in the Washington, D.C. area that are pet-friendly. However, it’s important to note that each campground has different rules regarding visiting pets, and it’s always good to call ahead and verify that your particular pet will be welcomed.

Cherry Hill Park is home to the closest campground to Washington, D.C. The campground has been operating for more than 25 years. It offers 400 RV and tenting campsites with water, sewer and electric hookups; more than a dozen cabins; restrooms with hot showers; two laundry facilities; propane refills; and ice, firewood, and filtered water. In addition, there are hiking trails, playground and a swimming pool. Pets are welcomed at the RV and tenting areas, as well as some cabins.

Part of the National Park Service, Greenbelt Campground is located approximately 12 miles from Washington, D.C. The campground has 174 RV and tenting campsites situated in a wonderfully wooded area. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring. There are also onsite showers and flushing toilets; however, no electrical services. Nearby attractions include the Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens and Goddard Space Flight Center. Pets are allowed at the campground but not in the sanitary facilities.

Harpers Ferry Campground is located on the shores of the Potomac River. The picturesque campground has 20 locations for tenting, 15 for RVs (with water and electric hook-ups) and four cabins. There is also an onsite bathhouse with showers and flush toilets. Guests can also take advantage of rafting, tubing, kayaking, canoeing, biking, hiking and a zip line. Pets are permitted with the exception of “aggressive” dog breeds.

Family owned and operated, Take It Easy Campground is located in Southern Maryland and offers 242 campsites for RVs and tenting. It offers numerous amenities including free Wi-Fi, seasonal swimming pool, stocked fishing areas, playground and a prayer chapel. Guests have easy access to the area’s many historic sites such as St. Mary’s City, Piney Point Lighthouse and Sotterley Plantation. Pets are allowed with the exception of pit bulls and rottweilers.

Capitol KAO is situated on 50 beautiful acres. It offers campsites for RVs and tenting and has cabins ranging from one room to deluxe with linen service. It offers guests many amenities including free Wi-Fi, a seasonal pool and basketball court. It is also known for its special weekend activities such as outdoor movies and ice cream socials. In addition, Capitol KAO has a seasonal daily shuttle service and tour of Washington, D.C. Pets are allowed with the exception of doberman pinchers, rottweilers, pit bulls, and mixes of those breeds.
