Best Lunch Spots Near D.C.’s Jury Duty

Jury duty can be a real drag, but the good news is you can cheer yourself up with a tasty lunch. There are several good restaurants near the courthouse in Judiciary Square. Five of the best options are listed here. Each one is within walking distance of the courthouse and offers good food for a reasonable price.

Fiola is one of DC’s premier Italian restaurants and for good reason. Excellent service and delicious food are two constants at this fine dining venue. For lunch, enjoy beautiful salads like the colors of the garden salad with greens, beets, apples and blue cheese. Entrees include decadent pastas, available in half or whole portions. Indulge in a glass of the rosemary lemonade with your meal, and, if you have time, one of the great desserts which include ricotta doughnuts, chocolate mousse and sorbet.

Known for its fantastic modern Indian food, Rasika is a great option for a satisfying lunch when you have to suffer through jury duty. Treat yourself to mattar pudina tikki, which are green pea patties, creamy lentils called dal makhani, cauliflower cooked with cumin and ginger, smoked eggplant and more. Be sure to order some of the delicious naan bread and lemon rice. If you have the time, choose the tasting menu so you can try as many of the dishes as possible.

Spanish tapas are always a fun meal, and this is especially so at Jose Andres’ Jaleo. At lunchtime, for $25 you can choose one item from a four-course menu. Options include pan con tomato, fresh bread rubbed with tomatoes and garlic, arroz cremoso con setas, rice with mushrooms and cheese and espinicas a la catalana. Alternatively you can indulge in the lunch sandwich menu, which has items like the decadent grilled cheese made with three different kinds of cheese, honey aioli, and truffle oil.

This new vegan hotspot will provide you with a lunch that is delicious and healthy. From crispy “chicken” wraps to seitan burgers to tempeh tacos, this menu is incredibly varied, and each item is hearty and flavorful. The lavender lemonade is a treat, and remember to try one of the amazing vegan desserts. Native Foods is quick, casual and inexpensive, perfect if you are in a rush to get back to the courthouse and don’t want to spend an arm and leg on lunch.

701 Restaurant is one of DC’s best modern American restaurant, and for lunch you can choose from its regular lunch menu or from an expedited lunch menu served at the bar. Highlights on the lunch menu include a heirloom tomato salad with burrata puree, spaghetti with squash and mushrooms and greens with cheese and pecans. Lunch at the bar offers a handful of options, including a fantastic Portobello burger where the portobellos are chopped, cooked, used to form a patty, and then finally topped with a truffle glaze and aioli. For $17 you can enjoy one of the entrees with a glass of wine. A glass of wine might be just what the doctor ordered to get you through a long day of jury duty.
