Best Competitions To Get Dirty In The Washington DC Area

Forget boring marathons. For an experience completely out of this world, sign up for a color or mud run. These wild and crazy racing events feature a variety of obstacles that will test your brains as well as your brawn plus an awesome after party to reward you for all your hard work. Go ahead, you know you want to get down and dirty.

Rebel Race

Be a rebel with a cause—a cause to stay in shape, that is. This weekend-long mud run includes both 5K and 15K races, a military-style obstacle course plus overnight camping and a huge barbecue and beer bash. Test your strength and skills in the Lunatic Lagoon, Slimy Slope Slide and the Flaming Fury. After you cross the finish line, head to the showers then make your way to the party area where you’ll find food and beer for sale plus live entertainment. Each participant receives a Rebel Sports sack pack, t-shirt, chip timer, finisher medal plus one free beer for participants 21 and older. Participants can also bring a tent and stay on-site for the entire weekend.

Color Me Rad 5K

Ever wondered what it felt like to be an Easter egg? Now’s your chance to find out. Sign up for the Color Me Rad 5K and see what it feels like to be covered in colored cornstarch. Each leg of the race features color bombs of various colors including blue, pink and yellow. At the end of the race, your clothes as well as your face, arms, legs and any other exposed body part will resemble a t-shirt from the 1970s. Race day information packs, which will include information on parking, parties and how to remove the color when you get home, will be provided two weeks prior to the race. Funds collected for the Color Me Rad 5K will help benefit the Special Olympics Virginia.

Hero Rush

For a family-friendly racing event, grab the kids and head to the Hero Rush, a 5K race that features unique obstacles, live entertainment, a race for the kids plus food and fun. Get wet and wild as you climb ladders, slide down poles and make your way through a variety of mazes. The race also features firefighter-themed obstacles including crawling through smoky hallways, carrying “victims” through an obstacle course and racing through various debris. The kids will have a blast at the Inferno Midway, a miniature version of the large course. Participants will receive a timing chip and runner’s bib, a custom-designed Hero Rush t-shirt and $5 is Hero Dinero to be used for food and beverages available on site.

LoziLu Women’s Mud Run
Frederick, MD 21701

Date: July 20

This women’s only mud run features a 5K run, a variety of obstacles and an awesome after party. Climb an eight-foot wall, feel the wind through your hair as you sail down the 100-foot slip-n-slide and make your way up and over a 15-foot tall rope climb. At the end of the race, prepare to strike a pose as a studio photographer will catch the glorious moment as you cross the finish line, then head over to the “world-famous Snack Drawer” and refuel with free candy, cookies, drinks and fruit. LoziLu Women’s Mud Run also features a salon where all participants will receive a makeover, a Fitness Farmers’ Market and a huge dance party. Registration fees help support those who suffer from leukemia and lymphoma.

Warrior Dash

If you’ve ever wanted to scream “this is Sparta” or any other quote from a popular gladiator movie, now’s your chance. The Warrior Dash is a 5K race that features 17 crazy obstacles including the flaming warrior roast, death-defying Mortimer’s crossing and the challenging muddy mayhem. After you prove your warrior strength, grab a beer and enjoy delicious food as you jam along to the sounds of live entertainment. Awards will be handed out to the top three male and female participants, most ridiculous costume and best warrior beard. Each participant receives a fuzzy warrior helmet, t-shirt, finisher medal, race bib plus a complimentary beer and post-race snack and water.
