Washington is typically thought of as a buttoned-up town, but shows like Scandal and House of Cards have shown that we’ve also got style. While not all of this summer’s hottest trends are office friendly, there are many that can be incorporated into your business attire and others that will look great as you sidle up to the bar after hours. Here are five of summers hottest trends that you’ll definitely want to incorporate into your wardrobe.

Give ‘Em The Cold Shoulder

From completely off-the-shoulder to the more bra friendly cut-outs, baring your shoulders is one of the season’s biggest trends.  And, great news, it’s also super user-friendly!  Anyone can wear this trend (although probably not to the office) whether a casual boho look with a completely off-the-shoulder flowy dress is your style or you prefer more classic, tailored off the shoulder blouse — or anything in-between — there’s really something for everyone here.

Tie It Up

Shoes that lace, wrap or tie are the stars of the summer. The great thing about this trend is that there are a dozen ways to wear it and you don’t have to suffer for fashion in four-inch heels unless, of course, you want to. Stay comfortable in ballet flats with laces that wrap around your ankle or flat sandals that tie up your leg or make it even sexier in heels with laces. Want to try the trend but aren’t sure about the laces? A simple ankle strap is a great way to dip your toe in without going all the way.

Keep It Romantic

This season is all about romance. Incorporate this trend into your wardrobe with lace, ruffles and sheer elements. Look for this everywhere from black-tie gowns to casual tee-shirts and everywhere in-between. Traditionally you’d expect to see this at your baby and bridal showers, but don’t be afraid to take this trend to work. A lace pencil skirt or ruffled blouse is a great place to start.

Make A Statement

Not feeling too adventurous with your clothes? Jewelry is a fantastic place to start when you want to quickly and easily update your look. This season, the way to do it is with a statement earring. Big and bold is the way to go for this look, and feel free to play with color and other embellishments, too. One fun tip: change out your studs for a big statement earring when you’re leaving the office and heading to happy hour for a quick and stylish update.

Wide-Leg Pants

Give those skinny ankle pants a break this summer and try out this season’s wide-leg pants. Whether you choose a full-length pair or a cropped gaucho style, you’ll want shoes with some height — think either heels or wedges. With these pants, a tucked in shirt or a top cropped to waist length will work best.
