The Capitals were presented with the first four-game home stand in their schedule, an ideal opportunity to get on a roll in what’s been a turbulent 2017-18 season so far.

But, after taking care of Minnesota — with a 3-1 win at Capital One Arena Saturday — the Caps followed it up with a letdown game, a 4-1 loss to Calgary, Monday night. They host Ottawa and Tampa Bay on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.

The Caps are now 11-10-1 and in fifth place in the Metropolitan division with 23 points.

Caps center Jay Beagle was faced with, frankly, a brutal question out of the gate during his weekly appearance with The Sports Junkies — ‘The Morning Skate with Jay Beagle,’ sponsored by Sport Automotive — Tuesday morning.

“You actually got off to a good start yesterday, which is rare,” said John-Paul Flaim. “And then it just fell apart, huh?”

“Yeah. Yeah. It was a really good start,” said Beagle. “Our starts have been something that we’ve been focusing on the last couple games. Came out of the gates good, and then we got scored on in the third [period] there twice kind of bang-bang on the PK.”

“You know, I don’t really know if I’d say ‘fall apart,'” he said. “But it’s the PK. It’s something that I take pride in, and a job that I love doing, that kind of lets the team down a little bit, just with not being able to get it done.”

“That’s a tough one to obviously fall asleep last night after the game, just because I’m on the ice for two goals,” he said. “You know, I thought we played good, and good enough to win, so it’s a tough one to take. That’s a tough one, like I said, to fall asleep to.”

Brutal question. To Beagle’s question, he handled it like a champ.
