Frustration Mounting Early for Grubauer, Capitals

WASHINGTON — The Buffalo Sabres scored the death blow with less than four minutes remaining in the third period, then scored an insurance goal to close out a 3-1 win over the Washington Capitals.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak and dropped the Capitals to 8-7-1, good for fifth in the Metro Division. More personally, it dropped the Caps to 0-5 in games with goalie Philipp Grubauer in net. After the game, he summed it up succinctly to reporters:

She provided further context saying that the frustration was directed internally instead of at his teammates.

“FWIW (for what it’s worth), I didn’t take this as Grubauer ripping his teammates at all,” she wrote. “He’s understandably frustrated. He’s played well in these games and hasn’t won a single one.”

It isn’t lost on his teammates, who feel the frustration:

In his five games, the Caps at 0-4-1, which doesn’t accurately reflect his .886 save percentage. Four of the five were on the back end of back-to-back games.
