There’s still plenty of summertime fun to be had. From ongoing outdoorsy activities to festivals and specific events, there’s so much to do around D.C. throughout the month of August. It’s time for some last-minute summer fun. So gather your gang and consider taking part in these great family-friendly activities happening around the region.

Truckeroo Festival

Date: Friday, Aug. 4, 2017 at 4 p.m.

Consider taking the family out for some hearty summertime grub at the Truckeroo Festival. Held monthly from April through September at the Bullpen Fairgrounds, this annual tradition is a hit with D.C. locals and visitors alike. At each festival you can expect delicious eats of all varieties from many of the area’s renowned food truck vendors. Live music, games and other entertainments are also included, making this a free to attend, family fun event.  The next upcoming Truckeroo will be on Aug. 4 followed by another on Sept. 1.

Date: Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017 at 6 p.m.

Outdoor movies are big around the greater D.C. area this summer, with many venues participating. The National Harbor Waterfront, a favorite destination for any number of reasons, is one place where you can enjoy family-friendly flicks every Sunday at 6 p.m. as well as special date-night films on Thursdays at 7 p.m.  The Movies for August include “Space Jam” on Aug. 6, following up with a double feature of “The Karate Kid” (1984 and 2010) on Aug. 13. “The Mighty Ducks” will show on Aug. 20, followed by Remember the Titans” on Aug. 27. Movies on the Potomac will continue to show throughout the month of September as well.

Grow family memories by joining in Family Garden Day on Aug. 12. The event will be held on location at the Washington Youth Garden, located on the premises of the National Arboretum, and will feature family-friendly fun throughout the day. In addition to hands-on gardening activities, visiting families will delight in crafts, games, tours and so much more, including veggie tastings! This event is free, but advance registration is required.

Bubble Run in DC

For a fun and refreshing activity consider D.C.’s installment of the Bubble Run. This isn’t your typical 5K race, but rather a chance to gather family and friends together for an noncompetitive 3-mile run of frequent foam waves located at each kilometer marker. Each Foam Bog spews a different color of the frothy stuff, and all ingredients are non-toxic and safe.  Even after the run ends the good times continue with dancing and other excitements and yes, even more foam!

There’s nothing like an annual community celebration to top off summer, and that’s just what you’ll get at 17th Street Festival. Held every season, this event is all about celebrating the diverse restaurants and merchants located all around Dupont Circle in a profuse setup of artists, artisans and other unique vendors. Enjoy a broad range of fun and activities, including live music, dancing and other entertainments. There’s plenty for children to enjoy also, with a whole kids’ zone setup. There’s even a pet zone and onsite pet adoptions too.
