WASHINGTON (CBSDC)– Social media users around the world are speaking out on the acceptance of refugees in the United States with the hashtag #RefugeesWelcome.
The Obama administration launched the hashtag on Tuesday evening in a Facebook post.
“Even as we intensify our efforts in coordination with our partners to take out ISIL, we cannot turn our backs on those most threatened by the terrorist group,” White House officials wrote on the page.
The post was also meant to assure Americans that law enforcement officials properly vet every refugee before they are granted admission into the states.
“Slamming the door in the face of refugees would betray our deepest values. That’s not who we are. And it’s not what we’re going to do,” President Obama wrote on Twitter.
A number of Republican governors this week said declared they would not accept Syrian refugees, citing the discovery of a Syrian passport found near one of the attackers in Friday’s deadly attacks in Paris. Experts have countered that governors lack legal authority to block the relocations.
