WASHINGTON (CBSDC/AP)– Presidential candidate Donald Trump is going after President Barack Obama claiming the administration is sending Syrian refugees to Republican states.

“They send them to the Republicans, not to the Democrats, you know because they know the problem… why would we want to bother the Democrats?” Trump told conservative radio host Laura Ingraham Tuesday, as reported by Politico.

Republicans urged an immediate closure of America’s borders to Syrian refugees Tuesday, drawing angry denunciations from some Democrats and igniting an emotional debate about U.S. values in the wake of the deadly Paris terror attacks.

The administration showed no sign of backing off its plans to bring an additional 10,000 Syrian refugees to the U.S. and mounted a hasty defense of its vetting process, which Attorney General Loretta Lynch assured Congress is “robust.”

Trump told supporters at rally in Tennessee Monday that refugees should remain in Syria.

“What I’d like is… build a big beautiful safe zone and you have whatever it is so people can live, and they’ll be happier,” he said.

The Associated Press reports that GOP states have taken in nearly double the number of refugees, with figures estimated around 1,000 for GOP states and 500 for Democratic-led states.

Though the host urged Trump to be cautious while using figures, he said, “No I’m talking about now, I’m talking about in terms of Syria. I’ve heard numbers as high as 250,000 people.”
