WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – French computer hackers are declaring “war on the Islamic State.”
A spokesman for the activist group Anonymous, wearing the group’s distinctive Guy Fawkes mask, said the violence in Paris “can’t go unpunished.”
“So get ready for a massive reaction from Anonymous. Know that we will find you and we will never let up,” said the man behind the mask. “War is declared. Prepare yourselves. Know this, the French people are stronger than you and will come out of this atrocity even stronger.”
The group posted a video Monday morning, as President Barack Obama and other world leaders discuss how to respond to ISIS at the G-20 meeting in Turkey.
Former CIA deputy director and CBS News senior security contributor Michael Morell says evidence suggests the Paris attacks were the end result of sophisticated planning and coordination.
“What we saw in Paris was the manifestation of a year-long effort by ISIS to build an attack capability in Western Europe,” he said.
The Anonymous statement, read in French, promised revenge against the Islamic terror group.
“We are going to launch the biggest ever operation against you. Expect very many cyber-attacks,” the group said.
Anonymous made a similar threat after gunmen killed 12 people in the Paris office of the satirical Charlie Hebdo newspaper.
“That’s why Anonymous activists from all over the world will hunt you down,” said the spokesman. “Yes, you, the vermin who kill innocent victims, we will hunt you down like we did to those who carried out the attacks on Charlie Hebdo.”
