WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – Donald Trump says he deserves Secret Service protection…and suggests partisan politics is the reason he’s not getting it.

The Republican presidential candidate told The Hill that the huge crowds he attracts at campaign events should be reason enough to merit the extra protection.

“Of course I don’t think they’d want anything to happen. But I would think they should be very proactive and want protection for somebody like me that has 20,000 people at any time,” Trump told the paper. “You would think that they would want to be very proactive, but we have not heard from them.”

Currently, the billionaire uses private security for protection. He reportedly beefed up his security after a threat from Mexican drug lord Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who escaped from prison earlier this year.

When asked why the agency hasn’t approached his campaign about a security detail, Trump answered that he is the victim of political gamesmanship. “They’re in no rush because I’m a Republican. They don’t give a s**t,” Trump joked.

“I want to put them on notice because they should not have a liability,” he warned. “Personally, I think if Obama were doing as well as me he would’ve had Secret Service [earlier]. I have by far the biggest crowds.”

Obama was given Secret Service protection in May of 2007. Back then, agency officials acknowledged it was unusually early in that election cycle.

The Department of Homeland Security told The Hill it has not received an official request for protection.

A spokeswoman said after a request is received, the Secret Service consults with an advisory committee before making a decision.
