UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WNEW/AP) — Authorities say a Howard County Police officer has been charged with DUI and hit and run after a crash in Upper Marlboro.

Maryland State Police say the crash happened about 11 p.m. Tuesday. Troopers say a driver reported that her car had been rear-ended and the other driver, whom she described as unsteady on his feet, drove off.

Police say the driver took pictures of the license plate of the car that hit her. Investigators say motor vehicle records identified the owner as 37-year-old Corey Britton of Upper Marlboro.

Troopers arrested Britton at his home. He was charged with driving under the influence, failing to remain at the scene and other offenses.

Howard County Police Chief Gary Gardner said that Britton, a corporal, has been put on administrative duty.

Chief Gardner released the following statement later Wednesday:

“The Howard County Police Department holds its officers to the highest standards, both on- and off-duty. I have been notified that a Howard County police officer was charged with DUI by Maryland State Police last night in Prince George’s County. I am confident that the Maryland State Police will conduct a thorough investigation of all of the circumstances. I have been in touch with MSP Superintendent William Pallozzi and the HCPD is doing all it can to cooperate with his investigators and provide any information and assistance they need. Because this is an active case, I am unable to comment further on the details of the incident at this time. The Howard County Police Department also will conduct an internal investigation into the incident, after Maryland State Police have completed their preliminary work. At this time, Cpl. Corey Britton’s police powers have been suspended. He has been placed on administrative duty pending results of the investigation. Cpl. Britton has been with the HCPD since 2002, assigned to Northern District patrol.”
