WASHINGTON — Nearly four hours after a Special Police Officer was shot in D.C., police have arrested a suspect.

The Metropolitan Police Department said 41-year-old Renard Hampton, of Northwest, approached the officer around 11:55 p.m. Monday in the 1300 block of Fort Stevens Drive, Northwest. Hampton shot the officer, who fired back and hit Hampton.

Both the officer and Hampton were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

Police charged Hampton with assault with intent to kill at approximately 3:50 a.m. Tuesday.
