WASHINGTON — Jonathan Papelbon will accept the three-game suspension he was handed from MLB and will begin serving it immediately, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Papelbon was issued the suspension for throwing at the head of Baltimore Orioles’ third baseman Manny Machado twice in the span of three pitches last Wednesday.

The news comes in the wake of Papelbon and National League MVP candidate Bryce Harper getting into a brawl in the Nationals dugout toward the end of Sunday night’s game. Papelbon then entered the game for the ninth inning, gave up five runs and picked up the loss.

The Nationals announced Monday they have suspended Papelbon an additional four games, through the end of the season, for the altercation with Harper.

Washington was eliminated from postseason contention on Saturday.
