WASHINGTON (CBSDC)– Women around the world are taking to social media to share their experiences of abortion with #ShoutYourAbortion.
The latest viral hashtag is meant to speak out against the stigma and misinformation that still often surrounds the topic, as reported by The Guardian.
Three abortion activists started the hashtag Friday in response to Republicans’ efforts to defund Planned Parenthood, a taxpayer-funded service that provides reproductive health care and education. Two abortion-related bills were passed by the House of Representatives. President Barack Obama has said he will veto the legislation if it reaches him for approval.
Amelia Bonow, Lindy West and Kimberly Morrison asked women around the world to share their positive and empowering stories regarding abortion. The hashtag trended in Australia, UK, U.S., and in Ireland. Almost 70,000 people have used the hasthtag since it was introduced Friday.
My abortion was in ’10 & the career I’ve built since then fulfills me & makes me better able to care for kids I have now. #ShoutYourAbortion

#ShoutYourAbortion I was eleven and raped. Go ahead and tell me I’m in the wrong – but not the 36 yr old man who did it. Go on, I dare you.
