WASHINGTON — A Georgetown University football player is recovering after sustaining a serious neck injury during the team’s opening game against Saint Francis University Saturday.

Junior linebacker Ty Williams was injured during the first quarter of the game, Georgetown University officials say. He underwent surgery Saturday night at a hospital in Pennsylvania.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Ty Williams and his family,” Georgetown Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed said. “The coming days will be very important and we will be here to support him and his family. We ask our fans and the entire Georgetown community to believe and pray for Ty as he begins the recovery process.”

“Ty is one of our leaders on and off of the field and is a very important part of the Hoya Football Family,” Georgetown Head Coach Rob Sgarlata said. “He is a tremendous young man. We are hopeful that he will progress and we are keeping and him and his family in our thoughts and constant prayers.”

Williams is from Gaithersburg.
