WASHINGTON — A junior at George Washington University has gone missing while studying abroad in South Africa, school officials say.
Nicholas Upton was last seen swimming in the Eastern Cape province on Sunday around 10:30 p.m. local time.
The university says it was notified Upton was missing by the school’s study abroad program partner in Cape Town. Upton was traveling during a break in the program.
“Local authorities in Cape Town are conducting a search and are coordinating with program representatives, his family and the U.S. Embassy. We are closely monitoring this situation and are in touch with his family. We continue to hope and pray for Nicholas’ safe return,” reads a statement from Peter Konwerski, the vice provost and dean of student affairs.
