WASHINGTON — District of Columbia leaders are beefing up rewards for people who help police recover illegal guns as they seek to turn around a spike in violent crime.
Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Cathy Lanier announced Wednesday that the city is now offering a $2,500 reward for people who provide information that leads to the recovery an illegal gun. The reward was previously $1,000.
Police are also offering a new reward of $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in a nonfatal shooting.
There have been 98 homicides in the District so far this year, a 35 percent increase over the same point last year.
Lanier says police have made four arrests in homicide cases in the past two days.
