WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – Donald Trump may have gotten encouragement to run for president from an unlikely place.
As the reality television star was making up his mind about a possible run for the GOP nomination, former President Bill Clinton told Trump he was gaining support from frustrated conservative Republicans, reports The Washington Post.
This happened in the weeks before Trump made his official announcement on June 16, say aides to both men.
Four Trump allies and a Clinton associate confirmed the call took place in May, reports The Post.
They would not speak on the record, but all agreed that the talk was informal. Trump spoke candidly about his political ambitions and Clinton encouraged him to play a greater role in Republican politics, though he did not specifically tell Trump he should run.
“Mr. Trump reached out to President Clinton a few times. President Clinton returned his call in late May,” a Clinton employee told the paper. “While we don’t make it a practice to discuss the president’s private conversations, we can tell you that the presidential race was not discussed.”
A Trump adviser said Clinton initiated the call, but would not delve into the reasons for the phone call.
