MANCHESTER, N.H. (CBSDC) — Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie discussed birth control and his Catholicism during a town hall meeting in New Hampshire Tuesday.

Politico reports the New Jersey governor was fielding questions from patrons at Blake’s Creamery in Manchester. After speaking to diners for nearly two hours, a man brought up three Bible verses to support ending wars and environmental conservation.

Christie then replied with some insight into how he practices his Catholic religion.

“We should all acquit ourselves in a way we believe is consistent with the teachings that we follow, if we follow certain teachings from a religious perspective. That’s what I will always continue to try to do,” Christie said. “I’m a Catholic, but I’ve used birth control, and not just the rhythm method. My church has a teaching against birth control. Does that make me an awful Catholic because I believe and practiced that function during a part of my life? I don’t think so.”

Several people in the diner laughed at Christie’s birth control comment, including one man who is seen in the video putting his palm on his head.

A recent CBS News poll finds that only 3 percent of Republican primary voters would like to see Christie win the nomination. Donald Trump led the field at 24 percent.
