NEW YORK (CBSDC) — Jon Stewart set the record straight about his “secret” White House meetings with President Barack Obama on “The Daily Show” Wednesday evening.
Politico reported earlier this week that the 52-year-old comedian was summoned to the White House by Obama in 2011 and 2014. Several news outlets jumped at the news, trying to theorize what Stewart and the president were talking about.
“Wasn’t really that big a deal. I was brought through the secret White House tunnel entrance at Mount Rushmore. It was a roundtable meeting with the president, Elvis, still alive, Minister [Louis] Farrakhan, and the Area 51 alien,” Stewart joked.
Stewart’s visits were listed openly in the White House logs.
“The point is this – something is not a secret just because you don’t know about it,” Stewart said on “The Daily Show.” “Now the saddest part is the media has a serious case of FOMO (fear of missing out).”
One of the meetings took place hours before Obama warned Russia about invading Ukraine.
“So you believe as Russian troops gathered at the border of the Ukraine, Obama summoned me just in case he needed help in turning young Americans against Putin?” Stewart questioned.
The “Daily Show” host then described how the meetings went.
“We spent about five to seven minutes with Obama kind of scolding me not to turn young Americans cynical. And I spent about five to seven minutes explaining to him that I’m actually skeptically idealistic and smiling like this,” Stewart explained. “And then we spent about 45 minutes arguing about … the VA can’t be fixed any quicker, or Healthcare.gov can’t come online without crashing my son’s Minecraft game. And then the whole thing basically takes place over some of truly the best salmon you have ever had. So really, you remember my interview with Obama last week? It was that, but with salmon.”
Stewart even joked that Obama called him an “a******.”
“Now I can understand if there are some folks at Fox who are concerned that any meeting I take with a powerful individual should be disclosed lest it be considered possible collusion. Let me say this, I have been summoned by a surprisingly wide variety of individuals over the years, from tech giants to financial captains to Billy Joel, true,” Stewart said. “And the general thrust of all of those meetings or phone conversations are the same. Basically, it’s this: Jon why are you such an a******? It was true of the meeting with the president and it’s been true with the meetings with all those people.”
Stewart even mentioned his secret meeting with Fox News President Roger Ailes.
“Was the president of the United States trying to influence or intimidate or flatter me? My guess is uh-huh. Did it work? Might of. Was it sinister? I don’t f****** know. In fact, in my entire tenure here of being yelled at by some very influential and powerful individuals – and Billy Joel – only with one of those people has a phone call ever ended with quote ‘this conversation never happened and if you say it did I’ll deny it.’ And it wasn’t the fucking president,” Stewart said, referencing Ailes.
Stewart’s last “Daily Show” will be Aug. 6.
