WASHINGTON — A passerby was able to rescue seven people after the boat they were on caught fire near Ocean City.

Maryland Natural Resources Police say the rented pontoon boat caught fire shortly before 6 p.m. Monday, just south of the Ocean City inlet.

A passerby was able to rescue all seven people on board moments before it “burned to nothing.”

The boat was declared a total loss. Police say the passengers were from New Jersey.
