WASHINGTON — A longtime FBI agent who oversaw DNA analysis at the bureau’s laboratory has been named as the head of the District of Columbia’s troubled DNA lab.

Jenifer Smith was appointed Friday to lead the District’s Department of Forensic Sciences.

The department’s previous director resigned after a national accreditation body found that analysts at the lab were incompetent and ordered the lab to suspend all of its DNA testing. Since then, the District has been sending evidence to private labs for DNA analysis.

Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office says the department is addressing the shortcomings found in the audit and that auditors will be invited back in November for another inspection. The goal is for the lab to start conducting its own analysis in early 2016.
