WASHINGTON (CBS DC) — Billionaire businessman and 2016 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump doubled down on his recent comments claiming “rapists” and “killers” are pouring into the southern U.S. border illegally.
Speaking with CNN Wednesday night, Trump continued to lash out against illegal immigration amid his calls to build a massive wall at the Mexican border – and make Mexico pay for its construction. Trump cited a series of recent news articles about rape and crime, insisting that his controversial comments on immigrants are based on fact.
“It’s killing our country; people are pouring over the borders, pouring. We have incredible border patrols. These are incredible people, and they’re instructed they can’t do anything,” said Trump. “People are pouring into the United States, I guess some come from Mexico, but they come from all over the world — by the way they come from the Middle East — we don’t even know where they come from.”
CNN host Don Lemon questioned Trump’s use of the word “rapists” to describe those migrating over the border.
Trump also noted that Univision and Macy’s recently dropped Trump over his immigration comments.
“Well if you look at the statistics of people coming, you look at the statistics on rape, on crime, on everything coming in illegally into this country it’s mind-boggling!” he told Lemon. “If you go to Fusion, you will see a story: About 80 percent of the women coming in, you know who owns Fusion? Univision!
Go to Fusion and pick up the stories on rape. It’s unbelievable when you look at what’s going on. So all
I’m doing is telling the truth,” Trump said.
Lemon responded that such stories are about “women being raped, it’s not about criminals coming across the border or entering the country.”
“Well, somebody’s doing the raping, Don! I mean somebody’s doing it! Well, who’s doing the raping? Who’s doing the raping?” asked Trump.
He labeled Macy’s and Univision as “weak” and said they folded under outside pressure to drop ties with Trump.
“That’s the problem with our country, everybody folds under pressure,” he said.
