WASHINGTON (CBSDC)– HBO’s popular series “Game of Thrones” featured a scene Sunday that many viewers are upset over, including a member of Congress.

Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill spoke out via Twitter regarding her frustration.

The scene McCaskill refers to involved one of the show’s female leads being raped on her wedding night by her new husband as a manservant observes, as reported by CBS News.

Sophie Turner, the 19-year-old actress who plays Sansa in the series, said she had no problem shooting the scene.

“I love the way Ramsay had Theon watching,” she said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “It was all so messed up. It’s also so daunting for me to do it. I’ve been making [producer Bryan Cogman] feel so bad for writing that scene: ‘I can’t believe you’re doing this to me!’ But I secretly loved it.”

“Game of Thrones” has been criticized in the past for its extreme violence and sexual violence. This is the first time McCaskill spoke out about the content.

The controversial rape scene involving Sansa did not happen in the books which the series is based off. Series author George R.R. Martin has previously defended the show after critics noted it was significantly deviating from the novels.
