WASHINGTON — For the first time ever, BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport will soon offer charter flights to Cuba.

BWI announced Thursday the flights to Havana, Cuba will start in September.

The charter service will be offered by Island Travel & Tours, along with its partner, Swift Air.

The flights will operate twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, starting Sept. 30, 2015.

“We are very excited about providing this historic new service to Cuba from our Nation’s Capital and the Greater Baltimore region, and these new flights will make our client’s visit to the island more convenient and enjoyable,” said Bill Hauf, President of Island Travel & Tours, Ltd.

BWI was approved to handle service to Cuba in 2011 and there are currently 19 airports in the U.S. authorized to fly to Cuba.

President Obama announced the re-establishment of diplomatic relations and an easing in economic and travel restrictions on Cuba back in December of last year.
