WASHINGTON — Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is announcing a $1 million gift to the Smithsonian’s Asian art museums during his visit to Washington.

During a private reception Wednesday night, Abe said Japan’s government will give $1 million to the Freer Gallery of Art and Sackler Gallery. Smithsonian officials say the funds will support the museums’ Japanese art programs.

Abe says his government wants to support activities that promote Japanese artwork and exchanges between the U.S. and Japan.

Abe also announced that Julian Raby, the director of the Freer and Sackler galleries, will be awarded the “Order of the Rising Sun.” That is one of Japan’s most prestigious honors for accomplishments in international relations, culture and the environment.

The Sackler is preparing a major exhibition this year on Japanese artist Tawaraya Sotatsu.
