NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. (WNEW) – The Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center announced Thursday it is making a $20 million expansion.
The resort is working on a new building, which will include 16,000 square-feet of meeting space and is set to open in the fall of 2016.
The building is described as a dramatic, freestanding ballroom building. It will be on the banks of the Potomac River and feature glass windows on three sides.
“With its close proximity to the water and impressive year-round views, we believe this ballroom and its surrounding areas will be the premier location for small and medium-sized events in National Harbor, ” said Colin Reed, chairman and CEO of hotel owner Ryman Hospitality Properties.
The investment will also include an expansion of the current Orchard Terrace, enlarging this open-air events space to 39,000 square feet.
The expanded Orchard Terrace, opening in September 2015, will be the new location for Gaylord National’s popular holiday programming.
Architectural and interior design firm BLUR Workshop will design the new facilities.
