LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — A deadly accident closed Route 97 in both directions for hours Tuesday morning.

Howard County Police say the accident occurred around 9:10 a.m. on Route 97 at the Howard-Montgomery County line near Jennings Chapel Road. The road was plowed and speed was likely a factor, police say.

Preliminary investigation reveals a 2004 Acura RSX was traveling southbound on Route 97 when it came around a curve, left the roadway, entered the right shoulder and encountered a patch of slush, causing the driver to lose control.

The car swerved sideways into the northbound lanes and was struck by a 2006 Ford F-250 pickup truck with a plow on its front.

The driver of the car, 26-year-old Zeyu Zhang, of Timonium, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the identity of the male driver will be released once next-of-kin is notified.

The driver of the pickup truck has been identified as Phillip Saiz, 17, of Glenwood. Two other passengers in the pickup truck, 18-year-old Hayden Dice, of Mt. Airy and 17-year-old Casey Reimer, of Glenwood.

All three occupants were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Zhang was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision. Police say it does not appear that alcohol was a factor in the collision.

Police are investigating the possibility that excessive speed on approach to the curve may have been a contributing factor in the vehicle going into the shoulder area.

Route between Triadelphia Lake Road and Jennings Chapel Road was closed in both directions from 9:10 a.m. until 12:15 p.m.
