SHARPSBURG, Md. — The National Park Service is proposing higher entrance and campground fees at the Antietam National Battlefield near Sharpsburg.
The agency said Wednesday it will accept public comments on the proposal through Feb. 11.
The entrance fee per person would increase this year from $4 to $5 for a three-day pass. A three-day vehicle pass would rise from $6 to $10. An annual pass would increase from $20 to $30.
The stiffest increase would be at a group campground used by scouting and other youth organizations. The base rate would double from $25 to $50 for a two-night stay. Each additional night would cost $25, up from $10.
Park officials say they need the money to maintain the Civil War site and provide high-quality visitor services.
