WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather’s season is over after the team placed him on the NFL’s injured reserve list.

Meriweather sprained his right big toe in a Nov. 30 loss at Indianapolis and missed games against St. Louis and the New York Giants. He tried to practice on Wednesday and was “limited”, but didn’t participate at all on Thursday.

That could end Meriweather’s tenure with Washington after three seasons. He turns 31 on Jan. 14 and is a free agent. Meriweather played just one game in 2012 after a left knee injury and was suspended for the first two games of this season. He will have played in just 24 of a possible 48 games over three years thanks to injury and suspension.

“[Meriweather] tried to go [Wednesday] on a limited basis and he didn’t feel right about it,” Redskins coach Jay Gruden said after Thursday’s practice. “It was sore. You know, big toes for guys who have to backpedal are really, really hard.”

Meriweather has a checkered history of fines and suspension because of illegal hits that predates even his time in Washington. Phillip Thomas has started in Meriweather’s place at strong safety the past two games. The Redskins promoted linebacker Steve Beauharnais from the practice squad to replace Meriweather.

Meanwhile, defensive end Jason Hatcher has been ruled out for this week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles at FedEx Field on Saturday. Hatcher has a sore right knee. He was hurt during a Nov. 23 game at San Francisco, but played the next two games before sitting last Sunday against the Giants.

Washington’s top free agent acquisition to its defense last offseason, Hatcher, 32, has played in 13 of 14 games this season, but struggled with injuries to both knees. He had surgery on his left knee over the summer and was limited during training camp.

Linebacker Keenan Robinson is still fighting a strained medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his left knee. He is listed as doubtful for Saturday’s game against the Eagles. Left tackle Trent Williams is questionable with a sprained left shoulder. He didn’t practice on Wednesday, but was “limited” on Thursday and Friday.
