BEDFORD, Va. (CBSDC) – Norvell West founded CW Armor and has been making body armor for law enforcement officers and the military for nine years.  He has now started selling a new type of protective gear – bulletproof backpacks for children.

And they seem to be very popular.  “After unfortunately, a tragedy around a school, sales on the internet, we just almost can’t keep up with demand,” West told WSLS-TV.

West and his business partner came up with an idea to insert a plate into the front pocket of a backpack.

“This plate will stop all pistol, all pistol ammunition.  Even if the person is this close to you,” West explained to WSLS.

Erin McKee, West’s wife, says this is a reality that cannot be ignored.

“It was hard for me to put that in my child’s backpack the first day of school as I was putting in crayons and markers and construction paper,” she told the station.

McKee tells her children to put their backpack in front of their faces during a lockdown drill.

“They’re taught if somebody enters the school, just to put the backpack in front of their face,” West explained to WSLS.  “Or to ball up with the backpack on their back.”

McKee says that people call her paranoid but she feels one can never be too prepared to protect their children.

“It’s a small town, but the way I looked at it too was Sandy Hook was a small town too.  I just don’t want to take any chances,” she told WSLS.

West also makes plates to put into an iPad case and larger ones for a briefcase, which will cost slightly more.
