WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Former Redskin Fred Smoot was arrested Sunday morning on a charge of domestic assault, police say.
Police were called to the 21300 block of Victorias Cross Terrace in Ashburn, Va. at 11 a.m., after an adult female had reported Smoot grabbed her during an altercation, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office says.
Smoot, 35, was taken into custody and later released on $2,500 bond. He’s been charged with misdemeanor domestic simple assault.
A trial date has been set for Jan. 5, 2015 in Loudoun County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. Smoot must obey conditions set forth in an Emergency Protective Order and maintain good behavior until that date. He is permitted to leave the Commonwealth of Virginia.
“We ask for patience in allowing the legal process to play itself out,” reads a statement issued by Smoot’s attorney, Jon Huddleston. “These are the vindictive actions of a disgruntled ex-girlfriend which arose after Fred broke off their relationship more than a month ago. It is unfortunate that [the accuser] has elected to engage in a campaign to defame Fred and ruin him both personally and professionally. We are confident that Fred will be appropriately exonerated.”
Smoot contributes on-air segments to CSN Washington, WTTG-FOX 5 and WJFK-FM.
“Fred has been a contributor to the station and there are no plans for him to appear in the future,” says WJFK-FM Program Director Chris Kinard.
