ROCKVILLE, Md. (WNEW/AP) — Montgomery County elected officials dedicated a new plaza and eternal flame in honor of the county’s war veterans.

County Executive Ike Leggett and Council president Craig Rice dedicated the plaza and its Fallen Heroes Memorial, which is part of the Judicial Center Annex construction project, on Monday.

The plaza includes green spaces, benches, a water fountain and a memorial walkway featuring commemorative plaques.

Everett Alvarez, a former U.S. Navy commander and prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, raised the POW/MIA flag as part of the ceremony.
