URBANA, Md. (WNEW/AP) — Money flying around on I-270 North is causing major delays after an armored truck and dump truck collided.
The Maryland State Highway Administration tells WNEW that the two trucks collided just before 8 a.m. on I-270 at Route 80, causing the armored truck from the GardaWorld security company to lose money on the highway.
Maryland State Police say drivers were stopping to try to scoop some up for themselves. Police say those who picked up the cash can turn in at the Frederick Barrack on 110 East Airport Drive, or any barrack of the Maryland State Police.
Police say a woman has returned $1,160 and chose to remain anonymous.
Those who took cash from the highway and do not return the money could face theft charges if the continuing investigation leads to their identity, police say.
I-270 North was closed for a short period of time between Route 121 and Route 80 to try to recover the money.
A search of the area, assisted by a K9 team, recovered just over $200. A total amount lost is not known at this time and is being assessed by Garda officials.
No injuries were reported.
Information will be updated as details become available.
