LANHAM, Md. (WNEW) — A Prince George’s County police officer has been suspended after he was charged with theft on Friday.

Prince George’s County police say that Anne Arundel County police charged Officer Temitope Asaya, 30, with theft.

Asaya was off-duty at the time.

Anne Arundel County Police say that the charge stemmed from an incident on Sept. 12 at the Apple store in the Annapolis Mall. Police say they met with a victim who told them that she was shopping at the store when her iPad was stolen.

The victim told police that she accidentally left her iPad on the display counter. Detectives reviewed video surveillance of the incident that showed Asaya and another suspect, 24-year-old Tykina Marie Anderson, hovering around the iPad.

According to police, the video shows Asaya walk away. Then, Anderson picked up the iPad and left the store with Asaya.

One of the suspects contacted the victim when the iPad’s “lost mode” capability was turned on, and claimed they bought it on Craigslist.

Detectives were able to confirm the identity of Asaya and Anderson and charged them both on Oct. 3.

Asaya is charged with theft under $1,000 and conspiracy to commit theft under $1,000. Anderson is charged with theft under $1,000.

The victim’s iPad was returned to her.

Prince George’s police say they’ve launched an internal investigation and that Asaya is suspended with pay pending an administrative hearing.

Asaya has been with the department for four years and is assigned to the patrol bureau.
