WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell says the Affordable Care Act is working.
“When you consider the law through the lens of affordability, access, and quality, the evidence points to a clear conclusion: the Affordable Care Act is working,” Burwell said in a speech at the Brookings Institution on Tuesday.
Burwell knows that the website healthcare.gov needs to be fixed and addressed that later in the speech. “In order to make sure that Americans continue to access affordable choices, we have to get HealthCare.gov right,” she said.
The HHS inspector general issued a report and found “critical vulnerability” when it tried hacking healthcare.gov.
Last week, the HHS announced that 7.3 million people had signed up for plans — a statistic that Burwell reiterated in her speech.
“This is a very significant number, but I still think there’s another measure that’s even more important,” Burwell said.
“In just one year, we’ve reduced the number of uninsured adults by 26 percent,” Burewell said. “Said another way, 10.3 million fewer adults are uninsured today than in 2013.”
