WASHINGTON (CBSDC) — Heath Shuler is back reliving the glory days of college, in a follow-up to the wildly adored Dish Network commercial released earlier this month featuring fellow NFL busts Matt Leinart and Brian Bosworth.

Some constants carry through to the new commercial: Shuler delivers but one line, and Leinart steals the show with his own, this time standing over a lit grill wearing a Cardinal red USC apron, shaking a wiener in one hand as he wistfully longs the return of college “glory” back in his hands.

But the addition of another colossal bust, JaMarcus Russell, is the real selling point here, and indeed he is deserving of his barbecue company.

Russell was drafted number one overall in the 2007 NFL Draft, agreeing to a six-year, $68 million deal to play three miserable seasons for the Oakland Raiders. In that time, Russell completed 52.1 percent of his passes for 4,083 yards, 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions, before his weight ballooned him out of the league.

I can’t tell you how much I love this ad campaign, which both allows entire fanbases to laugh at their most bleak of times, while also freeing these once-promising but ultimately overvalued ex-players to embrace their tortured pasts in a lighthearted manner.

Long live Matt Leinart’s college memories. Here’s hoping Dish Network tackles Vince Young next.
