WASHINGTON — More than 3,000 volunteers are expected to beautify area schools, plant gardens and clean up public spaces in the Washington area as part of a national volunteer effort led by Comcast.

On Saturday, the company says more than 400 volunteers will be working at the District of Columbia’s West Education Campus. They will be repainting stairwells and murals, improving landscaping and building vegetable gardens.

The Comcast Cares Day volunteer effort also is expected to include hundreds more volunteers at projects in suburban Maryland and Virginia.

In Maryland, Comcast volunteers are working on projects with the Boys and Girls Clubs, the United Way of Frederick and schools in Waldorf and Suitland.

In Virginia, volunteers are cleaning up trash along the Rappahannock River and improving a Manassas community center, among other projects.
