WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray’s campaign called it a debate on his home turf, and the mayor did his best to take advantage.

Gray got louder cheers than any of his seven Democratic primary opponents during a debate Saturday morning at a high school in northeast Washington. The school is in the ward where Gray lives.

Councilmembers Muriel Bowser and Vincent Orange also had vocal supporters among the few hundred people in the audience. Councilmember Tommy Wells, meanwhile, was booed when he questioned the mayor’s to ethics.

Gray touted improvement in the ward’s schools as he asked voters to “stay the course” on education reform. And he said his opponents’ statements on education “ought to start with ‘Once upon a time.'”

The primary is April 1.
