WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – Sometimes it’s easier just to be shown, rather than turning to Urban Dictionary to explain what may appear as a foreign language. Every so often, Twitter organically yields to the unrelenting social power of its younger, trendier users.

While it’s often difficult to trace the humble beginnings of internet trends, it’s almost undeniable when one has breached the walls of the Millennial generation and entered the mainstream.

It may not be so much that you attempt to avoid Twitter’s trending topics as you peruse your own personally-crafted Timeline. But rather, at this point in your Twitter lifetime, you may have drawn the conclusion that sifting through the social network’s fad of the day can more often than not be an act of futility — in which you find yourself caught in the crosshairs of confusion, with the finger of teenage internet lingo pulsating on the trigger — and thus, you’ve shut it out from your life.

Since the turn of the new year, one particular selfie-themed trend has been the ruling class, and it’s best explained in photos, which will perhaps give Twitter’s older users a glimpse into the teenage counterculture. Last night, it seemed to reach critical mass.

Welcome to the 2014 Selfie Olympics.
