LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell is not far enough to the right for some conservatives.

The five-term Kentucky lawmaker is facing a primary challenger along with a growing lineup of conservative groups. The challenger is businessman Matt Bevin.

Critics argue McConnell is too willing to compromise on spending with President Barack Obama, too eager to bail out Wall Street, and too ready to grant amnesty to immigrants living here illegally.

That’s despite the fact McConnell opposed the Senate immigration bill with a path to citizenship in June. He also voted against Obama’s nominees to the Pentagon and CIA and to several courts. And McConnell never misses a chance to skewer Obama’s health care law.

McConnell’s even sidled up to fellow Kentuckian Rand Paul, the tea party’s fair-haired senator.
