LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — Author Jennifer Freyd says her book is about something we all have in common.
“Every human being has experienced a betrayal in our lives,” she says.
The book, that she co-authored with fellow Ph.D Pamela Birrell, is called “Blind To Betrayal: Why We Fool Ourselves We Aren’t Being Fooled.”
It explores the concept of betrayal blindness, or, why people ignore wrongdoings against them in order to avoid the fallout.
For example, “Someone feeling dependent on their spouse and their spouse is betraying them by being unfaithful, that person may have a motivation not to see the betrayal in order to preserve that marriage and that relationship,” according to Freyd.
The book also delves into how to deal with betrayal once it is noticed.
“There’s a phrase in psychology I like: “Become stronger in the broken place,” Freyd says.
