FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (CBSDC/AP)— A person of interest in the slayings of an elderly couple in Fauquier County is in custody, police say.

Sixty-year-old John Wesley Jeffries, of Fredericksburg, was apprehended in the 2000 block of Lafayette Boulevard shortly before 4 p.m. at the address of a “known associate.”

Jeffries was also wanted in Spotsylvania County on malicious wounding and other charges stemming from an incident there.

Police say the bodies of 80-year-old Nelson Slack and his 74-year-old wife, Ethel, were found early Sunday in their home on Bunker Hill Road. Police told WUSA-9 that friends of the couple phoned them when the Slacks were not seen in church.

The couple’s vehicle was found Sunday afternoon on the same street where Jeffries was found Wednesday.

Jeffries is listed as a violent offender on the Virginia Sex Offender Registry. Police told WUSA-9 that he may have known the couple.
