LANHAM, Md. (CBSDC) — When you think about book banning, you might conjure up images of the former Soviet Union, the Cultural Revolution in China or the Iranian Revolution. But it also happens right here in the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.

The 30th annual Banned Books Week is an initiative of the American Library Association, which hundreds of libraries and bookstores around the country use to draw attention to the problem of censorship.

The week-long initiative runs Sept. 30 – Oct. 6.

Award-winning broadcast journalist Bill Moyers delivers a powerful message about book banning and the harms of censorship in a new video essay to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week.
