Capitals General Manager George McPhee updated the media today approximately 29 hours since NHL free agency has started. The Caps have only made one move so far and that was to sign forward Joey Crabb (11 goals, 15 assists in 67 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs last season) to a one-year deal. Crabb is expected to play on the fourth line for the Caps.
“It’s not a great crop of free agents this summer,” McPhee said.
He added that he doesn’t expect to do anything here and that he has, “Nothing really active right now”.
“We’re in pretty good shape here,” McPhee added.
He also said “not necessarily” on having to sign someone to replace Alexander Semin’s scoring.
“Troy Brouwer got 20 goals for us last year, which is one less than Semin,” McPhee said. “We’ll try our own guys.”
Keith Aucoin doesn’t look like he’s coming back as McPhee said Aucoin is looking for a one-way deal and the way McPhee understands it, will go to Europe if he can’t find one in the NHL. He also said they might not have assistant coaches in place before development camp which starts next Monday.
