GERMANTOWN, Md. (CBSDC) — A 7th grade teacher from Neelsville Middle School in Germantown has been arrested for several sex-related offenses stemming from alleged inappropriate contact with a student.

Police say 50-year-old Cuyler Jay Cornell, of Stonebridge Court in Germantown, visited the student’s home during the 2010-11 school year when he was the student’s teacher. Authorities also say Cornell and the student went on excursions outside the realm of school activities during that time.

Following the school year, Cornell and the student continued to spend time together. Police believe Cornell inappropriately touched the student on two occasions during the summer of 2011. Further, detectives investigating the relationship say the victim and teacher continued to spend time together into the current school year.

A number of independent witnesses notified school officials and police of what they felt was inappropriate contact between the student and Cornell and an investigation was launched in February.

Cornell was arrested without incident on Monday. He has been charged with two counts of committing a third degree sex offense and
one count of sexual abuse of a minor.
