The Capitals held an optional practice today still not knowing who they will play in the next round.  The earliest the next round could start is Thursday, but more likely Friday or Saturday will be game one at Verizon Center.  Both Mike Knuble and Dennis Wideman skated in full pads today before and little during the optional skate.  This was Wideman’s first day skating in full pads since his injury and he was on the ice for around 45 minutes in all.  Bruce Boudreau said Mike Green is fine after taking a puck to the head last game.

The guys who took at least a part in the optional practice today for the Caps were Varlamov, Poti, Erskine, Wideman, Bradley, Fehr, King, Knuble, Chimera, Hendricks, Alzner, Neuvirth, Schultz, Collins, Carlson, Beagle, Sloan and Johansson.  The Caps will have full practices the next two days at Kettler Capitals Iceplex and both will start at 10:30am.

The NHL re-seeds after every round in the playoffs.  If Buffalo beats Philadelphia (tied at 3-3 and game 7 is Tuesday night) the Caps will play Buffalo.  If Buffalo is eliminated and Montreal beats Boston (Boston leads 3-2 and game 6 is Tuesday night) the Caps will play Montreal.  If both Buffalo and Montreal are eliminated, the Caps will play the winner of Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh (Pitt leads 3-2 with game 6 tonight).

The Capitals will have home ice advantage throughout the Eastern Conference playoffs and only finished behind Vancouver for best record in the NHL.  Check out what Bruce Boudreau, Michal Neuvirth, Karl Alzner, Jason Chimera, Matt Hendricks & Matt Bradley had to say following practice today.
