The Spartan Race is a long-distance obstacle course that is all about strength and endurance both mentally and physically. More than any ironman competition, this intense competition is not for the junior athlete. With different levels of distance and obstacles, the Virginia race is the Super Spartan, which is the middle level that will be eight to nine miles of mud runs and trails with more than 20 obstacles that can be anything from gauntlets to rope climbing. More than just a race, it’s an adventure and a community of athletes that can stand up proud saying that they finished it with the bruises to show. Start times begin in at 8 a.m. where there will be 200 Spartan participants released at a time in five groups. The top three male and female finishers will earn a free entry to the top-level Spartan Beast. On Saturday, there will be a special Spartan Heat, which gives you the opportunity to run the race with the founders and staff of Spartan Race in this team-driven competition that kicks the intensity up a notch. Costs are on a sliding scale from now until the race and spectators can enjoy the fun for $20, which gains them entry to the festival grounds.
