Celebrate Cinco de Mayo to the fullest this year by heading to some of the following venues, known for serving the best tacos in town. There is nothing like chips and salsa, tacos and margaritas to put you in a festive mood. These restaurants all offer a variety of tacos, reasonably priced and available in abundance. Don’t forget your sombrero.

Mama Chuy’s verdura tacos are a sight for sore eyes. Delicious corn tortillas are stuffed with mushrooms and spinach and heaped with a bundle of flavor: crunchy shredded lettuce, sweet tomato, onion, crema and fresh cotija cheese. The good news doesn’t stop there. Two tacos will only set you back $4. A variety of other tacos, as well as other Mexican dishes, are on the menu, as are a plethora of Mexican beverages such as beer and margaritas. This is the place to go for authentic tacos.

Tacos are the name of the game at Tacos El Chilango, a restaurant in DC which specializes in tacos. Traditional meat tacos are available, but vegetarian tacos are the real area of expertise at this Mexican venue. Vegetarians will be delighted at the selection of cheese and green pepper tacos, cheese and avocado tacos or cheese and mushroom tacos. Double wrapped in corn tortillas, topped with fresh cilantro and onion and drizzled with your choice of salsa, an order of three tacos costs $7.50. Fresh guacamole and chips, sangria and homemade fruit juices are also available.

For a fabulous breakfast taco, head to District Taco. Served in a flour tortillas, you can choose from the basic filling of eggs, cheese and potatoes, the healthy breakfast taco made with egg whites or the veggie filling with onions, peppers, cheese and beans. Each one comes with unlimited toppings which include everything from pico de gallo and sour cream to garlic-lime rice. Corn tortillas are available if that is your preference. Three tacos cost $7. If you can’t make it to the restaurant, check the website to find out where the food truck is headed.

For fancy tacos in an upscale venue, check out El Centro D.F. The most unique taco on the menu is the grilled nopal with veggies, cactus and chayote stuffed into corn tortillas and drizzled with a red chile-tomatillo salsa and fresh Mexican cheese. Other types of tacos such as fish, chicken and even calamari are on the menu as well. All tacos come with rice and beans but vary in price. The grilled nopal tacos are $10.95 for three. El Centro has a dining room, rooftop bar and basement tequila bar, so you can celebrate Cinco de Mayo in style. You may also consider making a reservation for the weekend brunch, where tacos and brunch cocktails are all you can eat and bottomless for $35.

For the best single taco in town, you will want to try Oyamel’s taco de hongos con crème. This taco features decadent, earthy wild mushrooms sautéed with sweet shallots and Mexican crème, enrobed in a warm corn tortilla. Yes, these tacos are unlike anything you have ever tasted. Spicy salsa and tart pickled onions add depth of flavor and texture. Small but satisfying, each taco is $4. If mushrooms aren’t your thing, the taco menu at Oyamel includes fish, beef and even grasshopper tacos. Be sure to order one of the famous margaritas to wash it all down.
